55. We need law

We need law.

I won’t identify myself, nor tell you what I do, because in our small community you would instantly know who I am, and I wish to provide this commentary in the same manner as every other contributor, so that you may be impartial, and judge my wisdom and my prudence and not be influenced by my credentials.

I’ll be brief.

I have almost four decades of observing the law from a number of different positions. I have seen how law brings order and fairness.

Law is the distillation of human logic. Each decision is predicated on a fact established in another decision. The strength of every legal argument can be followed in the wisdom of the law.

Only those who violate it see the law as constraining.

I see the law as a kind of sheet music, orchestrating the behavior of all those in society so that our daily social symphony goes smoothly.

Law, and our practice of it, is not perfect. No human endeavor is perfect.

But, the law protects us in our homes at night. It protects us in our business dealings. It protects us in our family interactions. It protects our wishes when we are dead.

To the degree that humans can bring order and protect the rights of everyone, it is done, through the law.

I have occasionally perhaps faltered in the results of my duty, but never in the execution. To err is human, but the law has always guided my decisions.

None of you will, I know, but let me invite you to read some law, to see it’s thoroughness and detail. That is the work of generations of dedicated professionals.

Read case law, test your judgement against those who have determined before you. Follow a complicated case through judgement to appeal to decision to execution. You will see how law brings regularity to the chaos of humans all acting only in their own best interest.

Learn more, and you’ll soon see the beauty of the law.

We do, indeed, need law.
